Did you ever hear about multi-step popups? If not then you miss out on something that will increase conversions.

Most of the people are only used to create traditionally kind of popup while they have the opportunity to create more like the ones who attract more people.

So let’s face it when you do a one-page opt-in form your readers could decide to give their email address or not.

But when you create a multi-step popup you are able to increase conversion quickly.

And in this post, I’m going to show you 2 methods for adding a multi-step popup. You will get to know more about MonsterLink and the Yes/No popup campaign.

Before I get to show you how you can create those popup you have to know more about them.

It is a popup campaign that has more steps involved than just one. In the old style of popup campaigns, your reader lands on a page where she/he sees a message which is appearing on the top of the content.

And those are usually where you ask your readers for their email address or redirect to another page.

But multi-step popup is way different than that and also has different phases like:

  • Get your readers to click on a link or button
  • Follow your call-to-action
  • Depending on your popup’s goal you can also display a thank you message

Here is how a multi-step pop-up looks like:

This image above shows you a Yes/No multi-step popup.

If you have been wondering now adding a multi-step popup going to hurt your conversions and if it is better to have fewer steps as possible, then think again.

Because this will increase it even more!

This is much less intimidating to your site’s visitors than immediately delivering contact information.

By getting your readers to click a link or a button before showing your call to action, you’ll increase your odds of getting more conversions. Plus, multi-step popups are ridiculously easy to create.

Make one popup will only take 5 minutes from your valuable time.

I know that not everyone loves to read and prefer learning through video tutorials so here is one for the visual learners:

Otherwise, keep reading this in-depth guide.

In this tutorial, you will find 2 ways for adding multi-step popups to your site and boost your conversion:

  1. MultiLinks
  2. Yes/No Campaign

But before you begin to create you’ll need an OptinMonster account.

OptinMonster is the best solution for you if you want to get more conversions in no time and with less stress. Another great news is that you can use my code: themompreneur to get 25% off of your subscription.

But if you are not satisfied with the software or don’t get any results (which I barely believe) you could test out with zero risks and get a 14-day money-back guarantee.

In this method, you’ll be using a MonsterLink, which is an embeddable link that you can add to any text or button.

When readers click the link, your popup campaign will appear. Thanks to the Zeigarnik effect (it is an effect that shows that people more likely finish a process they started), users will be more likely to opt-in to your offer because they already kicked off the process.

The more readers are clicking on the campaign the more interest they have on the content.

So you don’t have to worry because you can expect higher conversions with the use of MonsterLinks. And here is how you can create them:

1. Creating the popup

Once you logged in your OptinMonster account and you are at the dashboard click Create New Campaign in the top right corner:

Create a New Campaign OptinMonster

Now you can select your campaign type. In this tutorial, we will use a Popup campaign:

Choose popup campaign types

Then you will have to select a template:

OptinMonster campaign templates

OptinMonster has over 50 pre-built templates. In this time when smartphones are what we use the most probably your traffic comes from smartphones, so you can even filter your template options to be mobile optimized:

Mobile Optimized Templates in OM

There is also an option to filter your templates by goals of your multi-step popup:

Filter by goals

This is brilliant because it helps you decide which template works best for a specific campaign.

Also if you want to create a multi-step popup that shows your branding elements you can use the Canvas template:

Canvas Template in OptinMonster

This will allow you to create a popup from scratch. And if you have problems with coding you don’t have to worry because thanks to the drag-and-drop editor you can make it easier.

In this tutorial, we going for Basic:

Create an Inline Campaign Basic Template

Then, you need to name your campaign which it makes organized. Assign it to your website, and then click Start Building:

Name and connect your website

2. Designing your popup

Because there are too many customization options to cover in one post I don’t want to get into too much detail so you can check out how to create and design your first campaign on OptinMonsters blog.

But what I do want you to know about is how you can quickly and easily modify any part of your multi-step popup.

The campaigns are broken down in different elements which are called “blocks”. To modify them you have to click on them in the editor.

Text Block

And of course, you can modify the optin part:

Optin Block

When you click on any part it will pull up the editing tools on the left-hand side:

Popup Animation Demo

If you want to add a new block just click + Add Blocks at the top of your editing menu:

Add blocks to basic template

If you scroll down in the left-hand side menu, you’ll see the different block options that you can add to your multi-step popup. These blocks include:

  • Button
  • ChatBot
  • Countdown Timer
  • Divider
  • Image
  • Video

And more.

Element Block Options

It is also easy to use because you only have to drag and drop:

Drag and drop text block into basic template

So again, customizing your multi-step popup couldn’t be easier with OptinMonster. Here’s an example of the multi-step popup:

Multi-step popup demo

Keep in mind that you may need to customize your Success page depending on the goal of your campaign:

Success Page in OptinMonster editor

When your goal is to grow your email list you will want to modify the Success page with a “Thank you” message like this:

Thank you page optinmonster

If you’re redirecting users to another URL, then you won’t need to display your Success page at all.

Once you designed a popup campaign that you’re satisfied with, it’s time to set the display rules.

3. Adding MonsterLink

This is the first method you have to know about when creating your multi-step popup. When your readers are clicking on your MonsterLink your popup will appear.

At the top of your editor, click Display Rules:

Display Rules OM editor

By default, your first display rule will be Time on page, but you’ll see a drop-down menu below with different options for display rules that you can add. Look for MonsterLink™ (On Click):

Choose MonsterLink for Display Rule

Now you need to click on Copy MonsterLink™ Code:

Copy MonsterLink Code new OptinMonster editor

Your MonsterLink™ will be copied to your clipboard, and you can embed it wherever you would want.

Don’t forget that your MonsterLink™ is currently copied in an HTML form and many times you will need a link instead of an HTML embed code. For that, you have to only select the URL in between the quotations marks.

Now you have an embeddable link that you can put over any anchor text. When a reader clicks on this link, your popup campaign will appear.

As a result, you can expect higher conversions for 2 reasons:

  • People who click the link will have a higher interest in the content of your popup
  • People will be more likely to finish opting in because they’ve already started the process

All that’s left is to Save and Publish your campaign.

2: Using a Yes/No Campaign

This time, you’ll create a Yes/No campaign. Rather than asking your visitors to take action right away, a Yes/No campaign presents them with a simple “yes or no” question.

Your goal here is to get them to click Yes.

And once they do, they’ll be taken to your opt-in form or redirected to another URL. But just like we saw with the MonsterLink™, they’ll be more likely to opt into your offer because they’ve already started the process.

1: Create Your Multi-Step Popup

For this method, creating your multi-step popup works exactly the same way as it did earlier in with MonsterLinks.

2: Add Your Yes/No Button

This is where your new multi-step campaign becomes unique. At the top of your editor, click the Yes/No option:

Yes_No campaign button

Then click Enable Yes/No for This Campaign:

Enable Yes_No multi-step campaigns

This will create a new page in your popup campaign:

Yes_No campaign basic templateThe Yes/No popup starts with a basic “yes or no” question.

Just remember, the goal is to get users to begin opting into your offer with 1 click. If you can get them to click once, then you’ll increase your odds of getting them to take the action you want them to.

You can modify your campaign in the same way as we saw earlier in this tutorial.

What you need to know in this customization is how to modify your Yes and No buttons.

Just like any other block in your popup campaign, click on the Yes button to pull up the editing tools on the left-hand side:

Yes No editing tools in OptinMonster editor

You can modify 3 things:

  • Yes button
  • No button
  • Block

Yes Button Editing Tools in the sidebar

Click on whichever part of your Yes/No block you would like to edit to bring up the editing tools.

When scrolling down, you’ll also see that you can edit 3 things for both your Yes and your No buttons:

  • Regular: The appearance of your button in the campaign (color, text, border)
  • Hover: How your button looks when the users’ cursor hovers over the button
  • Action: What happens when the user clicks on the button

Regular Hover Action

That last one is important. Make sure that you’re selecting the right Action for your Yes and No buttons. The drop-down menu gives you many different action options, including:

  • Go to a view (the Optin or Success page)
  • Redirect to a URL
  • Click to call
  • Close campaign

And more.

Edit Button Actions for multi-step campaign

You have to decide which action you want to use for both your Yes and No buttons, depending on the goal of your campaign.

Making these modifications couldn’t be easier. Here is a Yes/No multi-step popup campaign for example:

Yes_No optin page

And here’s another look of what happens when a user clicks the Yes option and is taken to the opt-in form:

yes/no popup

And it is only 5 minutes to create.

3: Setting Your Display Rules

At the top of your editor, click Display Rules:

Display Rules OM editor

By default, your display rules are set for 2 conditions:

  • Time on page is at least 5 seconds
  • Shows on every page of your site

You can easily change these depending on which display rules would work best for your campaign. A great choice is using the Exit-Intent® technology, which displays your multi-step popup when a user tries to leave your site.

To change your display rules, click on the condition you want to modify. This will pull up your display options. For this example, click on Exit-Intent®:

Click Exit Intent

You can then choose which devices you’d like to use your exit-intent rule for:

  • Desktop only
  • Mobile-only
  • Both

select device for exit intent

The best thing is that exit-intent popup used to be limited to desktop devices. But not anymore! You can now build exit-intent popups for mobile traffic, too.

Finally, you can choose the sensitivity level for your exit-intent campaign (LowMedium, or High):

Select sensitivity for exit intent campaigns

And now you have an exit-intent popup to recover visitors who are leaving your website.

You are able to choose which pages you want to show your multi-step popup on. For that, go to your second display rule, which is the current URL path:

Current Url Path is Any Page

You can change the settings from is any page to a variety of options, including:

  • Just the homepage
  • Is not the homepage
  • Exactly matches
  • Does not exactly match
  • Contains

And more.

current URL path options

Then enter the URL for which pages you want to include or exclude. So if you wanted to show the multi-step popup specifically on one page like this:

Current URL exactly matches demo

That shows the current URL path + exactly matches + URL of the page.

These are just some of the display rules you can choose for your multi-step popup. With OptinMonster, you can choose exactly where, when, and to whom you want to show your multi-step popup.

That way, you get the most conversions in the least amount of time.

When you’re finished, all you have to do is to Save and Publish your new campaign.
